Lucky U NEWS

Winter 2009-10
The community of Chester, N Y is the home of Lucky U and Lucky U is the first entity in New York State to be regognized under the America's Promise Alliance. In the coming weeks and months, the entire community will be taking steps to implement the Lucky U initiative. Meeings have been held and will continue as the initiative gains momentum. One of the key elements of the effort is that fact that it is designed to be a "grassroots" movement; involving: youngsters, pre-teens, teens, adults and even the businesses in the area. Steps are being taken to gain approvals from the "gatekeepers" to enable the members of the "target groups" (youngsters, pre-teens and teens) to move forward with the projects they wish to fund and support. Meetings have proven to be most well received and the younger members of the community are advancing their ideas. The Lucky U initiative provides opportunities to truly "walk the talk". Most encouraging is the fact that the younger members of the community are taking the lead. Chester will set the pace for others to follow.

Lucky U is proud to announce that we are the first location in New York State to have been designated as a Promise Place in the America's Promise Alliance. We began our initiative in 1993-94 with the belief that caring adults would be willing to join an effort designed to: help build character traits, leadership skills, and self esteem, to help address: family, school and community concerns and, in the process, to help generate funds for worth while causes. Over the years, we have become acquainted with nationally known efforts which have similar goals. We believe that cooperative efforts hold the keys to success. We will continue to reach out to invite other to learn about our initiative. Like our hand, a given finger can do given things, but when working together, there is no end to what the fingers and hand can do. We are one tiny entity, but we have a plan that holds tremendous promise. We invite you to contact us and permit us to share our vision and goals with you. Can you imagine what can be accomplished if we pull together like the hand? We can and we have seen great results. Just look at the Chester Memorial if you need to see results. "One, plus unity, equals community"!

The Youth Bureau in Orange County, N Y submitted an application to have Orange County listed as one of the 100 Best Communities in the United States. The Lucky U initiative was named in two (2) separate parts of the application as evidence of efforts to address specific questions in the application. In response to have caring adults in the lives of: youngsters, pre-teen and teens the following narrative appears. "Additionally, the Lucky U initiative, based in the small but growing suburban community of Chester, was recognized as the First Promise Place in New York State. The initiative is a grassroots effort to connect each young person in the community with one caring community member. The caring adult commits to "be there" when the youth needs a caring hand, guidance, help and support or just a friendly face as they pass in the market." The second reference is the recognition that the Lucky U effort has component "tools" which are designed to help to insure that youngsters are physically and emotionally safe in their homes, schools, neighborhoods, communities and on the internet. The response submitted reads in part, "Grassroots groups like Lucky U and the Middletown Mayor's Youth Council have made efforts to connect young people with caring adults in their own hometowns through informal bonds and linkages throughout the community." Lucky U is proud to have been able to cooperate with Orange County to enable the Youth Bureau the opportunity to submit this application. We effort and recognition all of the communities in the county are positioned to benefit as these initiatives move forward.

The Backfire effort(1994 versions) and the Lucky U effort are built upon the following assumptions and beliefs: 1. individuals, young and old, care about and respect themselves and others 2. given the chance, individuals want to be in the "positive zone" and to associate with those who are doing good rather than to join groups that are causing problems for themselves and others 3. with Total Community Involvement, we can make positive differences in the lives of individuals and others; in fact in total communities.

In collaboration with "lead" groups, an invitation is being sent to every: individual, organizations, service club, youth group, business and community to look at the potential the Lucky U effort holds. We are operating on the theory that individuals do believe they are valuable. More importantly, when care is shown and demonstrated, individuals can impact lives of others. Our effort is built upon the fact that one can impact at least two other individuals. LEARN MORE!

Since 1997
One of the key elements of the America's Promise is to "HAVE A CARING ADULT IN THE LIVES OF THE INDIVIDUAL." Our Lucky U pledge card and the Backfire card of 1994, invite individuals to make a promise to themselves (the core value of our effort) and then the effort is designed to have individuals reach out and invite, at a minimum, two others to join the effort. Under our plan, one person can be responsible for reaching 255 others at level 7. We invite you to be the first in your area to join the effort.

Finally, we will acquaint you with the details in terms of how the businesses in your community and the entire community benefit as the Lucky U effort gains traction and moves from one community to another in your region.
