Lucky U NEWS

October 5, 2011
"Creating Ethical Communities" is the theme for the Character Education Partnership Forum which will be held in San Francisco from October 20 to the 22nd. Ed Stoddard, President of Lucky U will be a presenter on Friday afternoon.
Ed has one goal in mind as he prepared for this important event. He intends to share the "tools" of the Lucky U initiative and to demonstrate how these tools have worked and are working with members of the target groups: youngsters, pre-teens and teens.
His session will be an interactive one. Individuals will be asked to think and to think about their own communities as the session develops. One of the Lucky U approaches is to compare the "silo theory" with the Lucky U hand theory. The lesson in this example is one that has carry over far beyond members of the Lucky U target groups. (We are prepared to share out thoughts in this regard for any of you who wish to contact us after reading this note.)
The session begins with a review and consideration of the 11 Principles of Effective Character Programs. As the session develops, there are prime examples that reflect how the Lucky U initiative dovetails in meaningful ways with the elements of the 11 Principles.
Members will take home examples of the "tools" that Lucky U has developed and they will be encouraged to consider reaching out to their own community organizations to begin local efforts.
The lives of those we intend to reach are too important for us not to be able to bring this message home to others and to have others want to join the effort.
The eyes of two young ten year olds, a boy and a girl, provide a fitting conclusion to the Lucky U presentation. Knowing how important it is to show how adults care is one of the driving forces behind our total community efforts. Others will be invited to join as a result of the manner in which this session is developed. You are invited, at this time, to contact us and to learn how your community can benefit.

Lucky U has a formal agreement with the Kiwanis Club of Chester, N Y. The intent is to work with the club and the entire community to help generate funds for: causes the partner groups wish to support, and to help generate funds for the Kiwanis Club to contribute to the MNT Eliminate Project and the Chester Food Pantry.
The MNT eliminate Project is Kiwanis International's major campaing to reise $ 110 million dollars by the year 2015. Tetanus is a deadly disease that kills babies at an alarming rate and a most horrific death in countries throughout the world. At this time there are 38 countries where babies who suffer from this killer disease can not stand to be cuddled, can not stand light and can not stand sound as they lay dying. Kiwanis has joined with UNICEF and we know that 3 shots at a cost of 60 cents per shot can innoculate the mothers to eliminate this deadly disease. So for $ 1.80 the mothers and babies do not run the risk of coming down with tetanus and dying as described above. In Chester, the Kiwanis Club plans to contributethe other 50% of the profits they realize to the Chester Presbyterian Church food pantry. Finally the goals are to reach out and invite other groups to join this total community initiative. Youngsters, pre-teens and teens will direcftly benefit as a result of the manner in which the Lucky U effort is designed to be implemented in participating communities.

The Backfire effort(1994 versions) and the Lucky U effort are built upon the following assumptions and beliefs: 1. individuals, young and old, care about and respect themselves and others 2. given the chance, individuals want to be in the "positive zone" and to associate with those who are doing good rather than to join groups that are causing problems for themselves and others 3. with Total Community Involvement, we can make positive differences in the lives of individuals and others; in fact in total communities.

In collaboration with "lead" groups, an invitation is being sent to every: individual, organizations, service club, youth group, business and community to look at the potential the Lucky U effort holds. We are operating on the theory that individuals do believe they are valuable. More importantly, when care is shown and demonstrated, individuals can impact lives of others. Our effort is built upon the fact that one can impact at least two other individuals. LEARN MORE!

Since 1997
One of the key elements of the America's Promise is to "HAVE A CARING ADULT IN THE LIVES OF THE INDIVIDUAL." Our Lucky U pledge card and the Backfire card of 1994, invite individuals to make a promise to themselves (the core value of our effort) and then the effort is designed to have individuals reach out and invite, at a minimum, two others to join the effort. Under our plan, one person can be responsible for reaching 255 others at level 7.
We invite you to be the first in your area to join the effort.

Our new format will be in place. We are positioned to work with you and with exisiting organizations in any community. We will share information and will show how the elements of our effort are designed to help accomplish the goals we envision accomplishing. How the: "hand signals" appeal directly to the youngest members of our families, our schools and our communities; how the 8 "Added Values" and the Lucky U cards are designed to impact the lives of: pre-teens, teens and adults. Finally, we will acquaint you with the details in terms of how the businesses in your community and the entire community benefit as the Lucky U effort gains traction and moves from one community to another in your region. We invite you to help us build CHARACTER and strengthen LEADERSHIP skills! We have taken the lead; all we need now is for others to join the effort: to help to impact lives and to help strengthen individuals and communities. "One, plus unity, equals community!"
